In these times of environmental degradation, marked by the constant global movement of people and other animal species, scavengers are essential to keep new viruses at bay. They do so by eating and thereby removing animal corpses which would otherwise spread dangerous diseases even beyond their own environments, potentially evolving into pandemics. Therefore, the success of initiatives like the comeback of species on the brink of extinction are of utmost value, as we face the threshold of the sixth mass extinction.
